ACT Test Taking Tips Needed!

Hey guys! I'm about to take the ACT for the first time, and I'm not sure what to expect. Do y'all have any tips or tricks that helped you feel prepared? I'm especially nervous about the math section. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's completely normal to feel nervous about taking the ACT for the first time. The good news is, with solid preparation and a bit of strategy, boosting your ACT Math score is entirely possible and you'll find yourself doing well overall. Here are a few tips to help you out:

Learn the ACT Math Format: Knowing what to expect can decrease anxiety. There are 60 questions that you need to answer in 60 minutes, so speed is vital. The questions generally progress from easier to harder, and they cover a variety of topics including pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry.

1 Minute Per Question: Given the time limit, you have roughly 1 minute per question. If you find yourself stuck on a problem, it's completely acceptable to skip it and revisit it later if time allows.

Practice: Utilize ACT practice tests, and specifically pay attention to the Math section. By taking timed practice tests, you can learn to pace yourself and identify the types of questions that slow you down. Make sure to go over your answers, understand which answers you got wrong and why, and learn from those mistakes.

Use Your Calculator Effectively: You're allowed to use a calculator on the ACT Math test. Become very comfortable with your calculator before test day, knowing exactly how to perform complex functions that could save you time.

Memorize Key Concepts and Formulas: The ACT does not provide any formulas at the beginning of the Math section, so you'll need to have important formulas memorized.

Understand the Answers: The ACT Math section is multiple choice, which means that even if you don't know how to solve a problem, you can sometimes figure out which answers are wrong and guess from there.

As for general ACT test tips: stay hydrated and well-rested leading up to test day, read all instructions thoroughly, and remember, it's okay to guess — you are not penalized for wrong answers.

Good luck! You've got this!
