Stanford University Application Process

Hey guys, I've been working on my college list and Stanford is definitely a top contender for me. Can anyone shed some light on the application process? What are they looking for in an applicant? Any tips on how to make my application stand out?

When applying to Stanford, they use the Common Application or Coalition Application, along with the Stanford Supplement. The Stanford Supplement requires three additional essays. They will not only be looking at your strengths in academics, but also your contributions outside the classroom including leadership, character, and extracurricular activities.

Firstly, Stanford selects students who excel academically. They apply the Academic Index, a value representing the strength of your grades, test scores (if available), and class rank (if available). However, they also look for students who are likely to be active contributors to their community. For instance, students who have been involved in local initiatives, pursued personal projects, or held leadership roles in clubs or teams often shine brighter in the application pool.

One of the things that can make you stand out is developing a "spike," or a highly-developed specialty. This means going deep into one field or interest and showcasing your knowledge, passion, and achievement in that area. This highly-focused interest suggests dedication, discipline, and the potential for future success.

When writing your application essays, be authentic and original. Cliche topics should be avoided, aim to tell your unique story and how that’s shaped you. Consider crafting a narrative around a specific experience or event that had a significant impact on your life or shaped your interest in your intended field of study.

Remember, even for competitive applicants, Stanford is a reach school. Their acceptance rate is low, reflecting the competitive nature of admissions. Applying Early Action does give a slight boost to your chances, but doesn’t guarantee admission. Like all selective schools, Stanford is looking for top-tier students who demonstrate academic excellence, a robust character, and a purposeful engagement with their community.

Finally, make sure you submit your application by the deadline. The Early Action deadline is usually at the beginning of November, while Regular Decision deadline is at the beginning of January.
