What does Harvard look for in SAT scores?

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the typical SAT score range is for accepted students at Harvard. I know it's probably high, but I guess I'm just trying to figure out exactly what I'm up against. Cheers!

Hi! You're correct that Harvard is looking for high SAT scores, as it's considered an ideal fit for academically gifted students. As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, Harvard has decided to require standardized test scores, so your SAT score can play a significant role in your application.

For some context, in previous years, the middle 50% SAT score range for admitted students tends to fall between 1500 and 1580. That means 25% of admitted students scored below 1500, and 25% scored above 1580. So, while a score of 1500 is relatively competitive, a score of 1580 or higher is especially strong.

Note that a strong SAT score alone won't guarantee admission, as Harvard has a holistic review process that considers many aspects of your application. However, a good SAT score that falls within or above that middle 50% range can certainly contribute to a strong application. If your score is below this range, don't lose hope—make sure to give considerable thought and effort to the rest of your application, including your essays, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation.

Remember, even with the perfect SAT score, Harvard's acceptance rate is low, just about 3-4%. So, no matter what your scores are, make sure you're also applying to target and safety schools to ensure you have a variety of options. Best of luck!
