Rochester Institute of Technology Application Questions

Hey folks, I'm prepping to start my application for the Rochester Institute of Technology but I'm feeling a bit unsure about it. Are there any specific areas or aspects that I should focus more on in my application, like extracurriculars, essays, etc.?

Applying to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a multi-faceted process that will require you to showcase different aspects of your profile.

1. Academic Strength: RIT takes a close look at your high school transcript. It's not so much about achieving straight A's, but rather the rigor of your courses and how well you've performed in them. They'll consider your grades in context, so, for example, B's in AP/IB classes may be viewed more favorably than A's in standard courses. To give you an idea, in recent years the average GPA of admitted students has been around 3.7.

2. Test Scores: As of the 2024-2025 application cycle, RIT is test-optional, meaning you have a choice of whether or not to submit your SAT or ACT scores. If your scores are strong and enhance your application, go ahead and send them in. On the flip side, if they don't reflect your academic competence, you may be better off not submitting them.

3. Personal Statement: RIT uses the Common App, so you'll need to write a personal statement. This essay should tell your personal story in a way that is authentic and compelling. Avoid cliché essay topics such as sports victories or moving to a new school. Instead, consider writing about an aspect of your life or personality that isn't obvious from the rest of your application.

4. Extracurriculars: RIT will consider your extracurricular activities, too. Rather than simply listing as many activities as possible, focus on a few where you've taken on leadership roles, demonstrated commitment, or achieved something notable. They're particularly interested in seeing how you've pursued your interests outside of the classroom.

5. Recommendation Letters: Depending on your major, RIT might require a couple of recommendation letters which ideally should be from your high school teachers. These letters should speak to your ability, potential, and work habits. In general, a minimum of 1 recommendation letter is required.

Good luck with your application!
