Ways to achieve a high SAT score?

Curious as to how I could score high on the SAT test. What strategies should I follow? Should I focus on specific sections or take a well-rounded approach? Also, how much prep is 'enough' prep?

Scoring high on the SAT takes a targeted and disciplined approach. Here are some tips I would suggest:

1. Familiarize yourself with the test structure: Start by understanding the structure of the test. As of spring 2024, the SAT is fully digital and includes two major sections - Reading and Writing, and Math. The total duration of the digital SAT is 134 minutes, to complete 98 questions. Understanding the timeline helps to manage time during the actual test.

2. Practice with purpose: You might hear a common adage among test takers: "practice makes perfect". However, it's not just about how much time you spend practicing, but also the quality of the work applicable to you. For example, if you tend to run out of time on the Math sections, practice under timed conditions and identify the types of problems that you can answer more quickly.

3. Use the Bluebook™ app: The Bluebook™ app allows you to preview the digital SAT and take a full-length practice test. This can be an equally crucial part of your preparation. Familiarity with the format can do wonders for reducing test-day anxiety.

4. Work on your weaknesses: Once you've spot problems or sections that are consistently challenging for you, redirect your energy into conquering those areas. This may involve drilling with practice problems or brushing up on certain mathematical concepts.

5. Don’t neglect your strengths: While you should certainly spend time improving in areas that challenge you, don't forget to keep honing your strengths. It can be equally devastating to lose points in areas where you're usually strong simply because you assumed you "had those areas covered".

6. Regular review: Finally, the key to retaining information is regular review. Periodically go back and review older material to ensure that you're retaining what you've learned.

Regarding the amount of prep, it can vary widely depending on the individual. A good rule would be to start at least three months before the exam, dedicating at least 1-2 hours, 3-5 days per week. As the exam nears, increase the intensity as needed.

Remember that achieving a high SAT score is a marathon, not a sprint—consistency and discipline will be key in this journey. Good luck!
