ACT Science Tips Needed!

For the life of me, I just can't get my head around the science section of the ACT. It's not that I'm bad at science, but the speed needed is just killing me. How did you all tackle this section, any tips?

The ACT Science section can certainly feel very challenging due to the speed required. However, there are several strategies you can employ to make it more manageable.

Firstly, your difficulty with the section may not be due to your understanding of science but rather with understanding the presentation of data and information. The ACT Science section isn't about science knowledge per se, but more about reading comprehension, interpreting data charts, and honing in on information quickly.

When you approach a new passage, quickly glance over to get a sense of what type of passage it is, then dive right into the questions. Often, the questions will direct you to specific data sets or statements in the experiment summaries that you need in order to answer.

Another tip is to be familiar with the types of passages. These include Data Representation, Research Summaries, and Conflicting Viewpoints. Knowing the structure of each can give you a leg up when you're trying to digest the information quickly.

Managing time effectively can also make a big difference. On average, you should spend about 5 minutes per passage. If you come across a particularly difficult question, it may be more beneficial to skip it and come back later if time permits, rather than spending too much time and risking not being able to complete the section.

It would also be useful to familiarize yourself with the common types of questions like interpreting data, predicting outcomes from data, understanding experimental design, etc. Do lots of practice questions and full-length ACT Science sections to get better at recognizing question types quickly.

Lastly, remember that you can often find the answer directly from the passage. ACT is not like most science tests you take at school, where you are graded on memorized knowledge. Most of the information you need to answer the questions can be found in the passage.

Hopefully, these tips can help you improve your efficiency and accuracy in the ACT Science section. Practice consistently to reinforce these strategies and remember - it's not about background science knowledge, it's understanding the data presented to you. Good luck!
