Timespan of the ACT exam?

Hello everyone, I was wondering about the ACT's timings. I’ve heard it’s a pretty long exam and I’m a bit nervous because I tend to lose focus in longer tests. Is the ACT timed? If so, how long is it, and how much time do you get for each section? Thanks in advance!

Yes, the ACT is indeed a timed exam, and knowing the structure can help with pacing and overall preparation. The exam is divided into four required sections and an optional writing section, which you can choose to take.

Here's a breakdown:

1. English: You'll have 45 minutes to answer 75 questions. This works out to roughly 36 seconds per question.

2. Math: This segment features 60 questions, and you'll be given 60 minutes to complete them which means you average 60 seconds per question.

3. Reading: Here, you have 35 minutes to answer 40 questions, giving you slightly less than a minute per item.

4. Science: It's the same as the Reading segment; you have 35 minutes for 40 questions.

So excluding breaks, these 4 sections collectively take 2 hours and 55 minutes.

Additionally, if you opt to take the Writing section, it will add 40 minutes to your total timing, making the exam 3 hours and 35 minutes long.

Remember, practicing under timed conditions with official ACT practice tests is a great way to familiarize yourself with the timing and structure of the test. This should help you keep on pace and avoid running out of time on the actual test day. Good luck!
