ACT Grammar Section Tips

Does anyone have tips on how best to prepare for the Grammar section of the ACT? I'm decent at English but grammar can be tricky sometimes. Appreciate any advice!

Absolutely! If you're already good with English but find grammar a bit tricky on the ACT, just remember that this part is more about understanding the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, and punctuation. Here are some strategies that might help:

1. Review grammar rules: First things first, study the basic grammar rules which usually appear on the ACT. These include subject-verb agreement, verb tense, pronouns, punctuation, idiomatic usage, etc. There are many resources available to help you learn and practice these, ranging from ACT prep books, online ACT study materials, and English grammar textbooks.

2. Read widely: This may seem like a non-grammar-specific tip, but reading books, articles, and essays can help you familiarize yourself with the structure and proper usage of English sentences. By observing how published writers use English, you can develop a strong sense for grammar and punctuation.

3. Practice with ACT English passages: This part of the test includes passages with underlined segments. Your task is to identify whether there's a mistake in the underlined parts and then pick an answer that corrects the mistake or leaves it as is if there's no error. Work on as many practice questions as you can, both to get used to the format and to apply the grammar rules you've reviewed.

4. Learn the test format: Knowing the format of the test can save you time and prevent confusion. The ACT English section has 75 questions that need to be completed in 45 minutes. It comprises five passages, each followed by a set of multiple-choice test questions.

5. Answer every question: Unlike some other standardized tests, the ACT does not penalize students for wrong answers. So, even if you're unsure, make sure to fill in an answer for every question.

Remember that consistent practice and review can enhance your command of grammar rules and improve your score on the ACT English section. If you'd like to get some more general tips on how to succeed on the ACT as a whole, including some for the English section specifically, I'd check out CollegeVine's series of free blog posts focused on ACT prep: https://blog.collegevine.com/category/standardized-tests/act/
