Hey, I'm seriously considering UNC for college. Does anyone know what version of SAT score they're looking for? Is the in-state versus out-of-state average different?
UNC Chapel Hill is quite competitive with its admission standards. For reference, students accepted for the Fall 2023 semester had an average SAT score between 1360 and 1510. However, it's important to remember that for the 2024-2025 application cycle, UNC Chapel Hill remains test-optional, meaning the submission of SAT or ACT scores is not required.
They did note that SAT/ACT scores could still be used in consideration of merit scholarships or for course placement once admitted. So if SAT or ACT testing goes well for you, it may be beneficial to submit your scores.
In regards to in-state vs. out-of-state scores, there is often a bit of a discrepancy because of the different competitions between the pools. While UNC doesn’t officially release a breakdown, it is often the case that out-of-state students might need slightly higher scores due to increased competition for fewer spots. But again, the school looks at applications holistically, so your GPA, extracurriculars, essays, and recommendations play a significant role too.
