What kind of content should college essays ideally have?

I'm at the brainstorming stage for my college essays and I'm kinda lost about what exactly they’re supposed to include. I know it needs to be personal and authentic, but what kind of stories or experiences are colleges really looking for? Is there a golden formula or is it more about how you tell whatever story you choose? Help me out here, please!

It's wonderful that you're putting thought into the substance of your college essays. You're right, the key is to be personal and authentic. Colleges are looking for stories that provide insight into who you are, what you value, and how you navigate your world. Think about moments where you faced a challenge, learned something significant, or had an impact on others. How you tell your story is indeed important; your voice should come through clearly and show your reflection on the experience. For example, a student I worked with wrote about their regular walks with their grandmother and how these strolls sparked their passion for storytelling. The focus here isn't solely on the walks but rather on the applicant’s engagement, personal growth, and the realization of their interests. There's no golden formula, but a mix of sincerity, depth, and clarity can certainly make for a compelling essay. Remember, it's not about grandiosity but rather the significance to you and your perspective. Best of luck!
