Understanding the ACT score bell curve

Does anyone know how the bell curve grading works for ACT scores? I'm assuming a bell curve is used to grade these tests but I would love more information to understand how my score might change based on the performance of others.

Responding to the point about understanding ACT scores and the potential influence of the "bell curve," it's important to clarify a common misconception: standardized tests like the ACT aren't scored on a traditional bell curve where the performance of other test-takers could significantly impact your score.

What the ACT actually uses is a system known as equating, which is somewhat different. In equating, a score is given based on a test-taker's performance relative to a set standard, not other test-takers. This method allows the ACT to be consistent in its scoring across different test dates. It takes into account the slight variances in difficulty between test versions and ensures that a score of 30, for instance, stands for approximately the same level of ability no matter when the test is taken.

Simply put, if you and another student answered the same number and level of questions correctly, but took the ACT on different dates, you would still receive the same score, even if the test you took was considered "more difficult."

So, don't worry about the performance of others potentially affecting your scores! What matters most is your own performance and preparation for the test. Aim to understand the content, enhance your test-taking strategies, and track your own progress through practice tests.
