Is a Video Game Design Major Worth It?

Hey everyone, long time lurker here finally posting a question. I've been mad into video games since I was a kid, and I'm considering going for a major in Video Game Design. I guess my question is - is it worth it? What are your thoughts on the job prospects and career outlook after graduation? Thanks in advance!

The Video Game Design major can be valuable depending on what you hope to achieve in your career. You would gain extensive knowledge about various aspects of game design such as storyboarding, art direction, coding, and interactive storytelling, which could be utilized in various roles within the gaming industry.

However, it's important to note that the gaming industry is highly competitive, and breaking into it often requires not just a degree, but a strong portfolio and possibly internship or work experience. Graduating with a degree in Video Game Design might not guarantee a job immediately, but it gives you a foot in the door and a network to start with.

Another aspect to consider is the evolving nature of the gaming industry - it's not just about console and PC games anymore, but also about mobile gaming, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR). Studying Video Game Design can prepare you for these emerging fields.

On the flip side, some prefer a more broadly-based degree, like Computer Science, because it opens up a wider range of job opportunities across different industries. With this type of degree, you would still be eligible for game design roles, but would also have an easier time transitioning into other software or technology roles if you decide game design isn't for you.

Overall, it comes down to where your passion lies and the type of career you envision for yourself. Research thoroughly, ask professionals in the field for guidance if you can, and ultimately make the choice that aligns best with your goals and interests.
