Considering the military instead of college?

Hey everyone. Been pondering a lot about my future recently. I know a lot of people are keen on jumping straight into college after high school, but I've been thinking about a different path. Has anyone here considered joining the military before college? What made you think that way and did it work for you?

That's a significant decision to be considering and it's good you're thinking it through. While I didn't personally join the military, I've encountered many students who have ventured down that path and found it rewarding in different ways.

Some students are drawn to the military because it provides a structured environment to develop discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills. It's an opportunity to serve your country and could accommodate interests in fields such as engineering, medicine, aviation, and more. It's also often a means to finance higher education later down the line.

For instance, the G.I. Bill can provide benefits that cover tuition and fees, a monthly housing allowance, and a stipend for books and supplies for up to 36 months. Some service members take college courses during their service, and others use these benefits to attend college full-time after their service commitment ends. In both cases, the idea is that they'd get a college education without incurring student debt.

However, it's also important to note the potential challenges. The military is a substantial commitment, both in terms of time and responsibility. Basic training can be physically and mentally draining, and deployment, should it happen, is a reality to consider. Also, if you have a very specific profession in mind that you're eager to pursue at a younger age (e.g., medicine, law), the military route might delay entry into those fields.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal goals, ambitions, and values. What appeals to you about the military and how does it align with your larger life goals? It's a personal decision that should be made after careful consideration and consultation with trusted adults and mentors in your life.
