What does 'test optional' mean in the college admissions process?

I've seen a bunch of colleges labeling themselves as 'test optional' recently. Does it mean they don't care at all about standardized test scores, or do they still factor in if you choose to submit them?

Test optional refers to a school's policy in which you can decide whether or not you would like to submit your SAT or ACT scores as part of your application. Colleges with test-optional policies will review your application and make an admissions decision with or without these scores.

While each institution implements it differently, generally if you choose to submit your scores in a test-optional process, they will be considered in the context of your entire application. That said, if you opt not to submit them, your decision will not be held against you. Schools will then focus on other elements of your application, such as your GPA, course rigor, essays, extracurriculars, and letters of recommendation.

It is crucial, however, to research each specific school's policy because there can be small variations—and these can impact your application strategy. A great way to do this is to visit the college's admissions webpage, look for any FAQs, or even reach out to the admissions office directly. They are usually eager to help clarify any confusion around policies and procedures.
