What kind of Awards can boost my College Application?

Hey everyone, I'm starting to compile my extracurricular achievements for my applications, but I'm wondering what types of awards colleges find impressive or meaningful. Are there specific awards or honors I should aim for that could really enhance my application?

Awards and honors can certainly enhance your application, showcasing achievements that help you stand out from your peers.

Firstly, consider national or international recognition, classified as Tier 1 awards. These are the most impressive and as you might guess, the most difficult to win. Think prestigious recognitions, for example, a medal at the International Science Olympiad, a top recognition from the National YoungArts Foundation, or, if you're musically inclined, winning a national piano competition.

Next, Tier 2 recognitions display high levels of accomplishment and leadership at the state or regional level. They aren't quite as distinguished as Tier 1 awards, but they still pack a punch in terms of visibility. This category includes state champion in a sport, a statewide science fair winner, or state debate champion.

However, it's not just academic or athletic accomplishments that matter. Colleges also value dedication to service and leadership. Awards showcasing your commitment to these areas, at the school or community level, can also be meaningful.

In addition, remember that the context of these awards in relation to your overall profile is important. Your awards should align with your "spike", or area of deep interest and expertise. For example, if your application is largely centered around your passion for human rights, winning a national essay contest on justice reform could help reinforce this theme in your profile.

Even if you can't win a national or international award, taking part in competitions and showing progression over the years can be beneficial too. For instance, advancing from a regional to a state-level performance in any competition is also valuable. It's important that the awards you list demonstrate some level of progression or deep engagement in a particular area.

Remember, it's quality over quantity. It's better to have fewer awards that are more prestigious or are linked to your interests and goals than many less significant awards that don't help to reinforce your application's overall narrative.
