Interpreting SAT Averages

I often hear 'average on the SAT', could you clarify what it means? What would be considered a standard or average score? Bit stressed here!

When we talk about the 'average SAT score' on a national level, we're referring to the mean score of all test takers in a given year. For example, the most recent data from the College Board, which administers the SAT, shows that the average score was about 1050 out of a possible 1600. This breaks down to an average of about 530 in the Mathematics section and about 530 in the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section.

But when colleges list their 'average SAT score', that's the mean score of their accepted students. For instance, if College X shares an average SAT score of 1400, they're saying the typical admitted student scored 1400. It doesn't mean you need a 1400 to get accepted, but it gives an indication of the score range of admitted students.

Keep in mind, this average score can vary widely from one university to another. More selective schools, such as the Ivy League, may have average scores upwards of 1470. On the other hand, some less selective or smaller schools may have average scores around the national average, or even below.

Don't let all this stress you out! While SAT scores are certainly a factor in college admissions, they're not the only factor. Schools also consider your grades, class rigor, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and essays. Consider the 'average SAT score' as a general guideline, not a strict cut-off.
