Trying to Understand SAT Scoring

I'm new to the whole SAT thing and I'm a bit lost on how the scoring works. Can someone provide a clear explanation on the score range for this test? A breakdown of the sections would be great too. Thanks everyone!

The new digital SAT scoring can be a bit confusing at first if you're new to college admissions, so here's a breakdown to make it easier to understand.

The digital SAT consists of two main sections: Reading and Writing, and Math.

Each of these sections is scored separately on a scale of 200-800. The scores from the two sections are then added together, giving you a composite score that ranges from 400-1600. So if you heard of a student scoring 1400 on the SAT, that's their composite score out of a maximum possible of 1600.

The Reading and Writing section has two 32-minute modules with a total of 54 questions. Generally, your score in this section is based on how many questions you answer correctly, your precision, and your speed.

The Math section, on the other hand, has two 35-minute modules with a total of 44 questions. For scoring, it follows a similar principle: your answers, precision, and speed affect your score.

Keep in mind that you can use your calculator on both math modules.

The final composite score gives college admissions teams an idea of your overall SAT performance. However, some colleges place more importance on your section scores (especially if you're considering a major that's heavy in English or math), so both components are important.

Also, don't forget that many colleges look at more than just your SAT score when reviewing applications, like your GPA, extracurriculars, essays, and more. But a strong SAT score is certainly a positive component in your college application.
