Math Section of the SAT

Just starting to prepare for the SAT and kinda feeling overwhelmed. What kind of math does the SAT cover? I want to know what I should focus on while studying. Thanks for the help!

The SAT Math section is indeed a mix of several areas of mathematics, and understanding what's covered can definitely be useful for structuring your study session.

Firstly, you'll encounter Heart of Algebra questions, which focus on the mastery of linear equations and systems, including graphing and solving them.

Secondly, there's the Problem Solving and Data Analysis portion. This tests your understanding of ratios, percentages, and proportional reasoning—key for solving problems in a real-world context.

You'll also face Passport to Advanced Math problems. These delve into more complex equations and the manipulation they require. This includes nonlinear expressions and equations, such as quadratic equations and functions.

Finally, there's an Additional Topics category, which covers a variety of other math concepts—chiefly from geometry, trigonometry, and complex numbers.

Remember that the SAT no longer has a no-calculator section—so you're allowed to use your calculator on both Math sections. Keep in mind though that not every problem requires or is even best handled by a calculator. Sometimes basic algebraic manipulation can get you to the answer more efficiently.

Lastly, don't forget to experiment with different problem-solving strategies. For example, since the SAT does not penalize for incorrect answers, it's to your advantage to answer every question, even if that means guessing when you're unsure.

Thorough practice and attention to your weak areas will help you get more comfortable with the SAT math questions over time. Good luck with your preparation!
