When is the optimal time to start prepping for the SAT?

Hey guys, I'm sort of stressing about when to start studying for the SAT. I want to make sure I have enough time to fully prepare but also focus on my other responsibilities—any ideas on when to start grinding?

Hi there! Determining the best time to start studying for the SAT can seem overwhelming, but here's a general timeline that could guide you. You might want to begin your preparation at least six months ahead of your intended test date.

For example, if you plan on taking the SAT in the spring of your junior year, starting your preparation in the fall of your junior year would be a good idea. This timeline gives you ample opportunity to familiarize yourself with the test format and content, identify your strengths and weaknesses, and gradually improve your weaker areas without feeling rushed.

During your prep period, aim to tackle SAT prep for a few hours every week while also balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and personal life. Consistency and focused study sessions are key when preparing for the SAT. The digital SAT has two 32-minute modules each for reading and writing, and two 35-minute modules for math. You can use the Bluebook™ app for full-length practice tests in the new digital format.

Keep in mind that although achieving a high SAT score can be beneficial to your college application, it's only one facet of your profile. Schools also value your GPA, course rigor, essays, recommendations, and extracurricular activities, so ensure these aspects are not overlooked in your focus on test prep. Best of luck!
