Enlisting in military while still in school, any opinions?

Hi all, is it possible to join the military while I'm still in college? I wondered if it's a viable option or would it be too difficult to manage both at the same time? Would love to hear from anyone who's done this or knows more about it.

It's absolutely possible to enroll in the military while you're still in college, and there are several programs that are designed to assist students in doing just this. The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is one of the most common and offers scholarships for college in exchange for future military service. The National Guard also allows you to serve while pursuing higher education.

However, managing both commitments can be challenging. It requires careful planning and time management skills. You'll have to balance your academic workload with military training schedules. Also, your duty to the military may require short notice activations which can interfere with your class schedule.

It's important to note that military service provides valuable benefits such as developing leadership skills, discipline, and a sense of responsibility. Also, there are financial benefits - for example, the G.I. Bill provides financial support for schooling and housing to people with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001, or those discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days.

It's advisable to have an upfront conversation with both military and college representatives to understand all that is required and if it seems feasible for you. It is vital to openly communicate with your professors about your commitments as well. Many colleges also have offices/services dedicated to meeting the needs of student service members and veterans, so look out for those resources.

In the end, it's about finding what fulfills you both acadically and in terms of service. It's definitely a significant commitment, but many have found it to be a rewarding path.
