What's the deal with the CEEB lookup?

Hey all, I keep coming across this term 'CEEB lookup' when filling out my college applications. Kinda confused over here. What is it, exactly? Also, how crucial is it for the application process? Any insight would be super appreciated. Thanks!

The CEEB lookup is quite simple—it's just the method by which you find the unique CEEB (College Entrance Examination Board) code for your high school. Each high school in the United States has a unique code assigned to it by the College Board. These codes are used to identify high schools and to ensure that your SAT scores, AP scores, and other test results are sent to the correct schools.

When you are filling out your college applications, you will often need to provide this code. In essence, this is a way for colleges to verify that the information you provide matches up with your high school's records. While it might seem minor, this is actually considered an essential piece of the application process and helps colleges establish the authenticity of your application.

Typically, when you're filling out the Education section of the Common App or other college applications, you'll enter the name of your high school. An autocomplete feature often pops up with matching results, and your CEEB code will be included automatically once you select your school.

In the rare case that your school's CEEB code is not coming up or if you're an international student, you can check with your high school counselor or on the College Board's website for your code. Do keep in mind that many international schools may not have a CEEB code, especially if they don't offer College Board examinations such as the SAT or AP tests. If that's the case for you, don't worry. Colleges understand this and you may leave it blank or there might be an "I don't have a CEEB code" box to check. In any case, don't stress too much—your application won't be hurt or disqualified for not having a CEEB code.
