Navigating Calc AB and BC

Hey everyone, I'm planning on taking AP Calculus but I'm torn between AB and BC. High key curious about which one is generally considered to be harder? And also would colleges view one favorably over the other? Any input would be genuinely appreciated.

Both AP Calculus AB and BC cover fundamental concepts in calculus, but the depth and breadth of topics differ. AP Calculus AB is equivalent to a one-semester introductory college calculus course and it covers limits, derivatives, and integrals. On the other side, AP Calculus BC is equivalent to a full year college calculus course (or calculus I and calculus II) and in addition to all the topics in AB, it goes into more advanced topics such as sequences and series, and polar and parametric equations.

Generally speaking, Calculus BC is regarded as more challenging than Calculus AB because of these extra topics and its faster pace. You will be learning more material in the same amount of time, which can be a significant jump in workload.

In terms of how various colleges perceive these courses, they are both highly respected. However, if you plan to pursue a degree in a STEM field where advanced calculus principles are frequently used, such as engineering or physics, doing well in Calculus BC can show colleges that you're capable of handling more advanced and rigorous coursework.

However, bear in mind the overarching goal is to challenge yourself and do well. If you're unsure of your ability to succeed in BC, it might be better to opt for AB where you feel more confident. Universities would rather see a high score in Calculus AB than a low score in Calculus BC. At the end of the day, choose the class that aligns with your academic strength, interest, and your future college major or career plan.
