Understanding the GPA Calculator at University of Florida (UF)

Hello everyone, I'm a junior preparing for college applications and University of Florida (UF) is on my list. I've heard they use their own GPA calculator for admissions. Can anyone explain how it works? Especially interested in how AP and honors classes factor into it.

Sure, happy to help! The University of Florida (UF) uses a unique method to recalculate GPAs of incoming freshmen. They primarily focus on the academic core subjects like Mathematics, Social Science, Science, English, and Foreign Languages for GPA calculation.

Here's briefly how UF GPA recalculation works:

1. Grades in Honors, Advanced, AICE, Dual Enrollment, and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes will receive an extra half-point (.5) added to the numerical GPA value of the grade earned (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1). This bumps an 'A' in an honors class, for example, from 4 to 4.5.

2. Grades in Advanced Placement (AP) and Higher Level (HL) IB classes will receive an extra full point (1.0) added to the GPA value of the grade earned. So, an 'A' in an AP class moves from 4 to 5.

3. Then, they total the points and divide by the number of courses to calculate your GPA.

Remember, UF will recompute all applicants' GPAs, and the recalculated GPA could differ significantly from the one on your high school transcript. Also note, 'weighted' grades from non-academic courses such as physical education and music courses are not used in the recalculation. Courses or credits that are classified pass/fail are not used in recalculation of the GPA.

I hope that helps and best of luck with your application process!
