Eyesight Requirements for Military Service

Random question but not really, does anyone know what the eyesight requirements are for the military? Like do they have strict standards or is it more on a case-by-case basis? I wear contacts/glasses so I'm wondering if that's going to be a problem. Thanks!

It's a good question, and the answer actually varies based on the specific branch of the military that you might be considering. Broadly speaking, all branches of the military have certain visual standards to ensure that recruits can perform their duties effectively and safely.

In general, you must have correctable vision. That means if you do wear eyeglasses or contacts, the prescription must correct your vision to a certain standard. For instance, in many branches, your vision must correct to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. Naturally, there are some roles, like pilots, where the standards can be stricter.

Something that’s not always widely known is that certain types of eye surgeries, like LASIK and PRK, can be accepted, but again, it depends on the branch and role. It's important to confirm these details with a recruiter or by checking with the specific branch's guidelines.

Also, while this isn't directly related, some branches have color vision requirements. They generally require you to able to accurately identify certain colors, which can be critical for certain roles.

I hope this gives you a starting point, but please double-check based on the specific branch or role you're interested in.
