How to Request and Submit College Letters of Recommendation

Hey all, I'm in the process of compiling my application materials for college and I'm hitting a stumbling block with the letters of recommendation. Any advice on how to politely ask my teachers for these letters? Also, once they agree to write them, what's the process for submitting them to colleges? Is it something the teachers do or I do?

Requesting letters of recommendation can seem daunting, but if approached correctly, it doesn't have to be. Balance politeness with straightforwardness when you request a letter. You can approach your teacher in person, or write an email detailing your request. Give them context about which colleges you're applying to, what major you're aiming for, and why you think they can provide valuable insight for the admissions officers.

Here's an example for a request. 'Dear Mr/Mrs. [Teacher's Last Name], I'm currently preparing my college applications and I need to submit letters of recommendation as part of this process. Given that I've learned so much in your class and you are well-versed in my academic abilities, I was wondering if you would be comfortable writing a recommendation letter for me? I believe your perspective would provide valuable insight for the college admissions officers reviewing my application. If you need any further information, I would be happy to provide it.'

Once your teacher agrees to write the letter, make sure to thank them for their time and let them know the deadline for the recommendation letter. Usually, the way to submit a recommendation letter is through the Common Application (or the UC application, or whatever application system the college uses). Your teachers will need to submit the letter, not you, to ensure its validity. They will receive an email with a link where they can upload the letter. Remember to give them ample time to write and submit the letter; ideally, you should ask at least a month before the deadline.

If you are using the Common App, you would invite your recommenders in the 'Recommenders and FERPA' section of the application. After you fill in their contact information, an email will be sent to them with instructions on how to upload the letter. You would follow a similar process if you are applying to colleges that use the Coalition Application.

Remember that life can be unpredictable, so it's a good idea to ask for a letter of recommendation from more than one individual to ensure you have a backup if necessary. I also recommend checking in with your recommenders a week or so before the deadline just to ensure everything is on track.
