ACT Writing Portion: How Important?

Hey guys, I've been prepping for the ACT and I'm wondering- How important is the Writing portion? Like, do a lot of colleges require it or look at it seriously? I don't want to stress out about it if it's not a major factor. Cheers!

Respondent 1: The ACT Writing section, also known as the ACT Essay, is important but not to all colleges equally. It's crucial to check the admissions requirements of the colleges to which you're applying. Some colleges may require the ACT Writing score, while others might not consider it at all.

Remember, the Writing section isn't factored into your composite score, it's reported separately as a scaled score between 2 and 12. But it can still impact your application if the college you're applying to requires it!

Therefore, if you're confident in your ability to perform well in the Writing Section, you might choose to take it simply because it could help differentiate your application. On the other hand, if essay writing isn't your strong suit, it might be worth focusing your efforts on the main sections of the ACT if none of your target schools require the Writing section.

Please note that since this can vary by college, it's really important to research your schools' admissions requirements.

Respondent 2: Don't stress too much! Less and less schools have been requiring the Writing section of the ACT in the past few years. In fact, most schools, including most Ivy League colleges, do not require it.

That being said, you should confirm whether your target schools require it, are neutral about it, or don't consider it at all. Depending on those answers, you can decide whether it's worth prepping for it or not.

Final piece of advice - if you are naturally good at writing and feel confident going into this section, there's no harm in doing it. It could even be a positive differentiator for your application!

Respondent 3: As already suggested, the first thing you should do is confirm the requirements of your target schools. Each school may weigh the ACT Writing section differently.

Remember, the Writing section is optional and scored separately from the rest of the test. The responses are scored by two graders on a scale of 1 to 6 in four different domains: Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization and Language Use, and Conventions. The domain scores are then combined to produce a score from 2 to 12.

While it may not weigh heavily on your overall application, it can certainly showcase your writing skills and your ability to build an argument effectively. It might also help admission officers understand your critical thinking and writing style better.

Good luck with your ACT prep!
