Thinking about joining the military for personal growth - yay or nay?

I sort of think that joining the military might be an opportunity for some much-needed self-growth. But I'm not sure if this is a good enough reason to make such a significant commitment. Has anyone here joined the military for the sake of personal development, and would you recommend it?
