Am I Competitive for UT Austin with my GPA?

Ok, so I'm looking to apply to UT Austin, but I'm not entirely sure if my GPA is good enough. Does anyone have any insight into what GPA UT Austin generally requires for admission? Any experiences from past or current students would be greatly appreciated!

The University of Texas at Austin is quite competitive, and they look for students who have excelled academically in high school. The average GPA for admitted students is generally around a 3.80 unweighted, but for more selective programs, it might be higher.

Keep in mind that GPA isn't the only thing they look at. They evaluate applicants holistically, looking at test scores (for the 2024-2025 application cycle, UT Austin requires all applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score), essays, extracurricular activities, and leadership experiences. They want to see that you've taken a challenging course load, including AP or IB classes if you had access to them, so your transcript will be closely analyzed.

If your GPA is slightly below 3.80 and the rest of your application is strong, you'll still have a shot. For instance, having top-tier extracurriculars, a specialty in a particular area, strong test scores, or a compelling personal story can help balance a lower GPA.

Also, keep in mind that UT Austin also utilizes a state law that admits the top-ranked students in Texas high schools. This could impact the competitiveness of the regular applicant pool.
