Looking at PWI schools, what are some things to consider?

Hi everyone. I've been looking at PWI(Predominantly White Institutions) for colleges, but as a minority student, I'm nervous. Can anyone share their experiences, or advice on things to consider while applying to or making a decision about PWI schools?

Hello there! Your feelings are absolutely valid given the circumstances. The first thing I'd advise you to look into is the diversity and inclusivity initiatives of any potential school. Browse through the institution's diversity statements, resources, and programs that support minority students. These could include things like diversity initiatives, cultural clubs, and targeted support services.

Additionally, visit online college forums or student reviews to get a sense of the campus culture, specifically from the perspective of other minority students. Seek out support networks like student organizations for minority students, cultural centers, or departments that focus on diversity and inclusion.

Also, look at the school's curriculum. Is there a commitment to inclusive education? Many schools have general education requirements about cultural or diaspora studies which show the institution’s dedication to broadening the understanding of different cultures and experiences.

Moreover, reach out to current students or alumni who identify similarly to you, and ask about their experiences. They can give you candid perspectives on the support and environment that the college provides to its minority students.

Remember, PWIs can vary greatly - some are extremely committed to creating a diverse, welcoming campus community, while others may be less so. Make sure you research each school individually, rather than just under the umbrella of PWI. College is just as much about personal growth and comfort as it is about academic growth, so it's crucial to choose the specific environment where you feel supported and able to thrive.

Best of luck with your decision!
