What high school classes should I take if I'm interested in a military academy?

Hi, I'm interested in attending a military academy post-high school and I'd like some advice on which high school classes to take. Are there specific courses that military academies value more or should I stick with a balanced curriculum?

Military academies generally look for applicants who have a strong foundation in core academic subjects, particularly math and science. So it would be beneficial for you to take as many advanced math and science classes as possible, including AP courses, if your school offers them.

The United States Military Academy at West Point, for example, lists the following recommended high school curriculum: four years of English, four years of college-preparatory mathematics (including algebra, geometry, intermediate algebra, and trigonometry), two years of a laboratory science (such as chemistry and physics), two years of a foreign language, and one year of U.S. history.

In addition to this, they mention that additional coursework in these areas and advanced classes (like AP or IB classes) will strengthen your application.

Also, classes that build leadership skills such as JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) or any class that offers leadership positions, are valued by military academies.

Beyond classes, physical fitness is an essential aspect of applying to a military academy so it’s a good idea to participate in athletic activities where possible, whether through actual sports or physical education classes.

Remember, the admissions process will look at your whole high school career, so consistency in performance and sustained involvement in activities matters greatly, as does demonstrating good character.

However, every student is unique, so the ideal course selection might vary from student to student. It's always a good idea to speak with your school counselor about your particular situation and goals. The academies' admission offices are also a great resource - they can provide detailed, specific information about what courses can best prepare you for their programs.
