Joining a Military Academy in Texas?

Hi everyone, I'm a junior from Texas and considering going into the military after high school. I've read there's a military academy here? Anyone know more about it? What's the application process like?

Hi! It seems like you might be exploring Texas A&M University's Corps of Cadets that's located in College Station. This is a prestigious military program, though it's not exactly an academy like West Point or Annapolis. It's a part of the larger Texas A&M University campus and offers students a military-type experience without the commitment of service.

If you're interested, I can guide your steps through the application process below:

First, you will apply to Texas A&M University through the ApplyTexas platform. You'll need to submit standard college application materials, such as your high school record, standardized test scores, activities list, and personal essay.

Then, on the housing application (which you receive after being admitted to the university), you will indicate your interest in Corps housing. Actually, acceptance into the Corps of Cadets is granted to all TAMU students who request Corps housing and meet Texas A&M University admission standards.

If you want to secure an ROTC scholarship (optional), you should also apply separately to the appropriate military branch (Army, Navy/Marine, or Air Force). Remember, earning a ROTC scholarship involves additional interviews and possibly a physical fitness test.

Make sure to visit the campus if you can. Visiting will give you a taste of campus life and allow you to meet current cadets, which can help you decide if it's a good fit.

Lastly, if you're admitted and decide to join the Corps, there is a New Student Conference you'll attend over the summer before starting in the Fall.

Just remember, while the Corps of Cadets gives you a military-style education and opportunities for leadership training, it does not require you to commit to military service after graduation. However, if you want an education leading to a career as a military officer, you might also consider applying to one of the five federal military academies, some of which require a nomination from a congressional representative.
