What are the recommended colleges in Poughkeepsie?

Hey, I'm a rising Junior considering colleges in Poughkeepsie due to family reasons. Can anyone offer some insight or recommendations about the colleges in this area?

There are two prominent institutions in Poughkeepsie, New York, that you might want to consider: Vassar College and Marist College.

Vassar College is a private, liberal arts college. It's known for its rigorous academics and commitment to undergraduate education. Class sizes are usually small, which promotes a tight-knit community and allows students to have close relationships with their professors. Vassar offers over 50 majors, but its English, Psychology, and Economics programs are particularly well-regarded.

Marist College is a comprehensive, private institution that offers a range of programs from liberal arts to professional studies. It offers small classes (about 16 students on average) and a student-faculty ratio of 16:1. Marist College's School of Communication and the Arts is fairly popular, and some of its strongly recognized programs include those in Business, Fashion, and Computer Science.

Both of these colleges are located in scenic surroundings, near the Hudson River, offering a blend of campus life with access to the natural beauty of the region. As always, I'd recommend a campus visit (if possible) to get a feel for each college's culture, environment, and student life to see if it's the right fit for you. You can also reach out to admissions officers or current students from each institution to learn more about their programs and life on campus.

In addition, about 20 miles south of Poughkeepsie you'll find SUNY New Paltz which is a more economical option and has strong programs in Education, Journalism, and Visual Arts. It could be worth exploring if you're interested in those fields and are able to travel a bit outside Poughkeepsie.

As you build your college list, you may find college search engines useful, like CollegeVine's, which allows you to filter schools based on a range of factors, including not just location, but also size, majors offered, student/faculty ratio, admissions requirements, and so on.
