From Steinbrenner High to the United States Military Academy-Any tips?

I'm a junior at Steinbrenner High School and I'm really set on applying to the United States Military Academy post graduation. Does anyone have any useful feedback or pointers on making the transition smooth?

First off, it's truly admirable that you've already set your sights on attending a prestigious institution like the United States Military Academy! There are a few key factors to consider when preparing for this transition.

1. Physical Fitness: The USMA stresses physical fitness. Prepare for the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) by regularly working out and maintaining physical fitness. The CFA includes exercises like basketball throws, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, a shuttle run and a timed one-mile run.

2. Academics: The USMA highly values academic performance. Make sure you're taking rigorous courses and maintaining a strong GPA. If your high school offers AP courses, these can be a great way to demonstrate your academic skills. Furthermore, the Academy most commonly requires a math or science teacher and a humanities or social science teacher to each write you a recommendation letter. Foster relationships with educators in these areas to aid this process.

3. Leadership: The Academy is also looking for future leaders. If you have the chance, take on leadership roles in extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs or even community service. This could range from being team captain, club president or organizing significant community events.

4. GT/Nomination Process: One unique aspect of applying to service academies is the need to receive a nomination from a U.S. representative, senator, the Vice President or President. Start this process early; reach out to your local representative and senators for their specific application procedures.

5. Medical Evaluation: The USMA requires a medical evaluation through the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB). This is to ensure you're medically qualified for military service.

6. Interview: An interview with a Field Force Representative is part of the USMA application as well. Make sure you're ready to show your interest and your understanding of the commitment required by attending the Military Academy.

The transition to any service academy is a big one, given the integration of academic, physical, and military training. Prepare yourself mentally for a shift in lifestyle and remember to seek out support when needed!

Remember, this is a serious commitment, attending USMA means committing to serve as an officer in the Army upon graduation. Be sure that military service is truly what you want for your future. Keep pushing ahead and good luck with your application!
