Hey friends! I'm scouting out Howard University, and I came across some discussions around its diverse and rich cultural environment. Can anyone share some insight into how diverse it actually is? Like are there a variety of clubs, organizations, or events that cater to different cultures, religions, etc? Thanks for any info!
Howard University is considered a historically black university, meaning it was founded with the intent of serving the African American community in particular. As of now, it continues to have a predominantly African American student body. This doesn't mean, however, that there isn't diversity within the community. There's a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, geographic origins, religions, and interests among the students.
There's certainly a lot of cultural enrichment to be found on Howard's campus. The university hosts numerous cultural, religious, and interest-based clubs and organizations. You'll find groups like the Caribbean Students Association, Howard University Muslim Students Association, and the Howard University Anime Club, just to name a few. These groups host events throughout the year to celebrate and educate others about their cultures, beliefs, and interests.
In terms of events, the university organizes and supports a plethora of functions that cater to different demographics and interests. Its annual homecoming celebration is renowned nationwide, uniting the entire student body and alumni with musical performances, food festivals, fashion shows, and more, many of which highlight African American culture and heritage.
So, while Howard is historically and largely African American, within that community there's a great deal of diversity, and the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extracurriculars that cater to various cultures, interests, and beliefs.
