Joining the Military post-High School

I'm greatly considering the military as an option after high school, but I'm not really sure where to start. Can anyone provide some guidance or steps to take towards enrolling in the military once I graduate? Thank you!

Absolutely, I'd be more than happy to guide you on this! Firstly, it's important to identify which branch of the military appeals to you the most - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or perhaps even the Space Force. Each has unique opportunities, responsibilities, and lifestyles, so it helps to do some research on each branch.

Next step would be to get in touch with a recruiter. Recruiters serve as a great resource to fully comprehend the commitment you're planning on making. They can provide tailored advice based on your personal situation, interests and long-term goals. Remember, it’s the recruiter's job to sell you on their branch, so to get a balanced view, you might want to speak with recruiters from several branches.

Simultaneously, take some time researching the demands of military service, both physical and mental. It’s a significant commitment, typically of at least 4 years.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a test you will need to take. It measures your knowledge and ability in ten different areas. It is not an IQ test, but the ASVAB does help the military determine which job you will be qualified for.

Once you've decided on a branch and talked it over with your recruiter, you'll go to a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). There, you'll take the ASVAB if you haven't already, get a physical exam, and review and sign your contract.

I hope this sheds some light on the process. The journey will be challenging, but remember, it is equally rewarding. The valuable skills you pick up along, the education benefits, the camaraderie, everything culminates into a unique and enriching experience. Good luck!
