How are high school transcripts viewed after military service?

Hey guys, I've been seriously considering joining the military after I graduate high school. I've heard you can use your service to later go to college. Will colleges still look at my high school transcripts even after I've done military service, or do they focus on different factors? Just a bit stressed thinking about it. Any insights would be appreciated.

Certainly, it's a big decision to join the military, and it's commendable that you're considering higher education as part of your post-service plan. More often than not, colleges do still consider your high school transcripts as part of your application, even after you have completed military service. While your high school grades are important, colleges understand that a lot can change during a military service term, and experiences there could have a maturing effect that positively impacts your academic abilities.

While your academic record is important, colleges also appreciate the unique perspectives veterans bring to the classroom. Your military experience can make you an appealing applicant in ways that go beyond test scores and GPAs. The leadership, discipline, and work ethic often developed during service are highly valuable. It would be beneficial to highlight these experiences in your application essays and personal statements.

Additionally, colleges may take into consideration any training or coursework taken during your service. Some military training can even be counted as college credit, depending on the institution.

You also want to take advantage of resources available to you as a veteran. There are various educational benefits, like the Montgomery GI Bill or Post-9/11 GI Bill, you can tap into to offset the cost of college. When you're looking at colleges, also consider whether they offer support programs or groups for veterans, as these services can make your transition to college smoother.

Remember, however, that admission requirements can vary drastically between schools, so it's always a good idea to reach out directly to the schools you're interested in for the most accurate information. And don't stress too much! Colleges understand military service is a life-changing experience and they will take that into account when reviewing your application. Good luck with your future pursuits!
