Opting Out of High School Military Recruiting?

Hey guys, I hope it's okay to ask this here but does anyone know how to opt out of military recruiting at school? I'm supportive of those who choose that path, but it's just not for me and I'd rather not have my information shared. Thanks for any help!

Hello! I completely understand your position and it's your right to control your information.

The good news is, it's entirely possible to opt-out of such recruiting efforts. When your school shares student information with military recruiters, it falls under the provision of the No Child Left Behind Act or the National Defense Authorization Act. However, these laws do provide an opt-out clause that you can utilize.

You can simply inform your school administration—in writing—that you do not want your student information shared. Schools often have a formal opt-out form that you can complete and submit; ask your guidance counselor or school office for this form. If they don't have a form, you can write a letter requesting that your information not be distributed.

Your letter should state that, under the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act and the National Defense Authorization Act, you are formally requesting that your student directory information not be released to military recruiters without your explicit written consent. Be sure to date the letter and keep a copy for your records.

Just remember, you need to submit this letter or form to your school every academic year. Hope this helps!
