Sac State vs UC Davis: Making the choice

I'm torn between Sac State and UC Davis. In terms of course rigor, opportunities, environment, cost, etc., which would you recommend for a prospective biology major? I'm hoping to get some personal experiences before making the decision.

Both Sacramento State and UC Davis have their own unique qualities, so it largely depends on what you're looking for in your university experience.

In terms of academia, UC Davis is known for its robust science programs, particularly in biology. Davis provides rigorous courses that can prepare you well for your future, whether you're planning on graduate school or jumping into the workforce right away. They offer research opportunities in numerous biology subfields, and many students say that these experiences are highly enriching and beneficial.

On the other hand, Sacramento State offers smaller class sizes which can lead to more personal relationships with faculty, and more one-on-one instruction. While course rigor may not be as intense as UC Davis, some students find the more balanced workload allows for a richer extracurricular life and more time to pursue internships and jobs.

When considering environment, UC Davis has a unique combination of a small town feel with the resources of a large research university. Davis itself is considered a "college town", which some students love, while others may feel it's too insular. Sacramento State is located in California's state capital, which not only provides an urban environment but also career prospects related to government and policy, even for those studying biology.

As for the costs, UC Davis, being part of the University of California system, generally has a higher tuition fee compared to Sacramento State, which is part of the California State University system. However, financial aid opportunities vary, so it would be a good idea to thoroughly investigate and compare the aid packages offered by each.

Ultimately, both schools have their strengths, and the choice to attend Sac State or UC Davis will come down to what are the most important factors for you. Try to talk to current or former students at both universities, and, if possible, visit the campuses to get a firsthand impression of each environment.
