Student Population at University of Michigan

Hi! I'm looking to apply to University of Michigan but I'm concerned about the size of the school. Can anyone tell me about the student population at UM? I'm curious to know more about the ratio of undergrads to grad students as well.

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is a large university with a vibrant student community. Around two-thirds of the students at UM are undergraduate students, while one-third are graduate students.

As of Fall 2024, the university will enroll approximately 33,488 undergraduate students and about 16,149 graduate students.

However, despite the large student population, the university ensures that class sizes remain relatively small to foster interaction between students and instructors. For example, nearly half of undergraduate classes have fewer than 20 students, which provides a more intimate academic setting.

You might also find that the large student population brings diversity and variety to the campus – there's a significant number of student clubs and organizations registered at the university, catering to a wide array of interests.

While the size of the university can seem daunting initially, many students find that the larger population provides them with opportunities to meet many different people, experience a variety of cultures, and become part of numerous communities within the university. Many UM students have shared that they were able to find their "place" within this large university, making it feel like a smaller, closer community.
