Grades Confusion: What does an 88 out of 100 translate to in terms of GPA?

Hey guys, I'm kinda new to this whole GPA thing and there's something I'm not quite getting. I recently got an 88 out of 100 for one of my major courses this semester. But, when it comes to my GPA, I'm not sure how that fits into the scale. Any thoughts on what the equivalent would be for a GPA conversion?

Hi there! The GPA scale can indeed seem a bit confusing when you're new to it, but it actually makes sense once you get the hang of it. In the United States, your GPA (Grade Point Average) is typically calculated on a 4.0 scale. Each grade you receive in a course is assigned a point value: an A is 4.0 points, a B is 3.0 points, a C is 2.0 points, a D is 1.0 point and an F is 0 points.

Here's how we can convert your 88 score: If the grading scale at your school follows the usual guidelines, an 88 score is usually considered a B+. While different institutions might slighty deviate from this, most of them assign to B+ a GPA of around 3.3.

In terms of steps, these very basic calculations are made for each of your courses, and then these points are averaged to provide your overall GPA. This is usually done mega-automatically by your high school or college's administration office.

Please note that this is an approximate value, and in many cases, the ranges for letter grades may depend on your particular school's grading policy. So, this should help you estimate where your 88 stands, but the final calculation could be slightly different.

Also, in case you're applying to colleges, do remember that admissions offices are very well aware of the different grading scales that exist, and they'll take all this into account when they review your transcript.
