How much do I need to budget for a degree from Juilliard University?

Juilliard University is on my dream list but I'm concerned if it's financially attainable considering tuition, extra expenses and all. Can anyone weigh in on the 'real' cost?

The Juilliard School, internationally renowned for its performing arts education, can indeed be a significant financial investment. As per their figures for the 2024-2025 school year, the base tuition has been listed as approximately $54,400 per year for undergraduates. However, the overall budget should include other key components in addition to tuition.

1. Room and board: This is a significant cost with on-campus living estimated at around $22,410 per year, which includes a double room and meal plan. Off-campus housing in Manhattan, where Juilliard is located, can vary greatly depending on location, roommates, etc.

3. Books, supplies, and other personal expenses: This can be a variable cost, but Juilliard estimates this to be around $4,130 per year.

4. Health insurance: If you are not covered under your family's health insurance plan, Juilliard offers a student health insurance plan, which costs around $3,300. Note that health insurance coverage is mandatory.

Adding these all together, an estimated annual total cost of attendance according to the official website would come to around $86,582 including travel, indirect expenses, and the orientation fee. This number does not take into account any program, instrument, or course-specific costs.

That being said, it's also crucial to take into account the financial aid options Juilliard offers. Most Juilliard students receive some form of financial aid, whether that be scholarships, grants, or work-study programs. The school reportedly meets on average about 90% of demonstrated need for its students. This can drastically lower the 'real' out-of-pocket cost that you or your family may be liable for, making this prestigious institution a more financially reachable dream.

Make sure to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), even if you don't think you'll qualify for need-based aid. Also, don't forget to look into various external scholarships or grants that might be relevant to your chosen area of study.
