Looking into Military Academies after High School

Hey everyone, I'm a junior and totally into the idea of joining a military academy post-graduation. Any insight into how the process works, like application or fitness requirements? Is there anything I should start doing now to prepare myself? Thanks in advance!

Hello!

First off, let me commend you on considering military academies. That's an impressive and honorable path. All of the U.S. military academies require a nomination from a member of Congress (either a Senator or Representative) or the Vice President, in addition to the regular application process. This process usually starts in the spring of your junior year, so you're right on time.

Regarding fitness, applicants are required to pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), which includes exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and a timed run. It would be wise to start training for this as soon as possible, building both strength and stamina.

In terms of academics, strong performance in advanced courses, particularly in math and sciences, is beneficial. Leadership in extracurricular activities is also highly valued, as military academies want individuals who have proven their ability to manage and lead.

A few other important points to remember: you have to undergo a medical examination as part of the admission process. Also, all appointments to the academies (with the exception of Coast Guard Academy) are contingent upon an unconditional commitment to serve in the military for a specified period after graduation.

If this is a path you’re dedicated to pursuing, I suggest reaching out to the academies' admissions offices and express your interest. They generally provide very precise instructions and help guide you through the process.

Good luck with your pursuit of this honorable path! I hope you find this information useful.
