Beginner’s Guide to Military High Schools near NJ?

Hi everybody! I'm based out of New Jersey and toying with the idea of a military future after high school. Can you guys recommend any military high schools near NJ? Ideally, I'd love some input on the application process and what kind of programs they offer.

Sure thing, happy to help! There are a few military schools relatively close to New Jersey that you might be interested in.

The Academy of the New Church is a military school located in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. The Academy offers a comprehensive high school education with a spiritual emphasis. While this may not be an explicitly "military" school, it does offer JROTC, a federally-sponsored program that can provide a solid introduction to military skills and values.

Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in Wayne, Pennsylvania is a well-known option. VFMA provides students in grades 7 through 12 with a strong academic curriculum, and the chance to participate in competitive sports. The curriculum incorporates a leadership and ethics focus throughout, so strong character development is emphasized. The application process typically requires an application form, an interview, recommendations, reports and transcripts from your current and previous schools, and possibly a standardized test score like the SSAT. Make sure to check the current requirements on their website as they might have changed.

Located in Virginia, the Randolph-Macon Academy is another strong military school. They offer a wide array of programs, including Advanced Placement courses and flight training. Their Air Force JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) is a renowned program that can help you advance a military career.

Lastly, Fork Union Military Academy, also in Virginia, provides a unique "One Subject Plan." Instead of taking multiple classes at once, students focus on one subject for seven weeks, allowing in-depth learning. This might be a good fit if you prefer a concentrated study approach.

Do remember to check each school's website for specifics about their offerings and admission processes, as they can vary. And before deciding on a military high school, consider what it means in the long term. Attending a military high school can provide a strong foundation for a future in the armed forces, but it's a substantial commitment with a unique lifestyle. It's worth taking the time to analyze the pros and cons, explore other possible careers, and maybe even speak with some military professionals to get a first-hand idea of what you'd be getting into. Good luck!
