Is a 28 on the ACT considered good?

Hey everyone, I just received my recent ACT results and I got a score of 28. I'm not sure how to feel about it. Is this considered a good score? Should I retake the test?

A score of 28 on the ACT is certainly above average—it places you in the 89th percentile of test takers nationally. However, whether it's "good" or not will depend largely on your college aspirations.

For instance, if you are aiming for highly competitive schools, a score of 28 might be considered on the lower end. But for many solid universities and state schools, a 28 is a strong score and will undoubtedly make you a competitive applicant.

For a bit of context, the average ACT composite score tends to hover around 21 nationally. So you're doing well relative to the average. But again, the 'competitiveness' of your score greatly depends on your college aspirations.

In terms of retaking the ACT, you might consider it if you believe there's room for improvement and if the schools you're targeting have higher average scores. But remember that it’s not all about test scores. Your GPA, course rigor, extracurriculars, essays, and letters of recommendation also factor into your application.

Before deciding on a retake, it may be beneficial to balance the potential benefits of a higher score with the effort and time it would require, effort and time which might potentially be spent better elsewhere in your application.
