Should I retake my ACT if I got a 16?

Guys, I just got my ACT score back and it's a 16. A little freaked out right now, is this score decent or should I start planning to retake the test?

First off, don't panic! While a 16 is a bit below the national average ACT score, which hovers around 20, your next steps depend on your college aspirations. If you're aiming for a selective college, it might be helpful to consider a retake, as most selective schools have an average ACT score well above 16.

However, it's also important to remember that many colleges have gone test-optional recently (an action initiated largely due to the Covid-19 pandemic), which means they don't require the ACT or SAT for admission. A lower score won't necessarily shut the door on these opportunities.

That said, it's always a good idea to aim to perform your best on standardized tests, so here are a few tips you can consider before a retake:

1. Identify Areas for Improvement: Look over the areas where you fell short and focus on those. The ACT has four sections (English, Math, Reading, and Science), knowing where you struggled can provide a direction for your study efforts.

2. Practice: There are resources available for ACT practice. Some are free online, while others may require a small fee. Practice tests can help familiarize you with the test format, reduce anxiety, and improve your performance.

3. Consider a Tutor: If you're really struggling, a tutor might help. They can provide targeted, personalized advice to improve your score, though bear in mind this usually involves a financial commitment.

Whatever you decide, remember that there's more to you than your ACT score. In the application process, colleges also look at your GPA, your classes, extracurricular activities, personal essays, recommendation letters, and more. Good luck!
