What to avoid in my Common App essay?

Feeling a little overwhelmed here. I keep getting different advice on what NOT to include in my Common App essay. Can anyone give me some clear no-nos? Things that might make admissions officers facepalm or put my essay in the 'no' pile?

Navigating the dos and don'ts of the Common App essay can indeed be tricky, and I understand why you'd want some clear guidelines. Here are a few well-agreed-upon 'no-nos' for your essay. You should generally avoid controversial topics such as politics or religion, unless you can handle them with extreme tact and they are integral to your story. Also, try to steer clear of clichés, like the 'big game' or mission trip essays, unless you have a truly unique perspective. Humor can be hit or miss, so unless you're confident in your comedic writing skills, it's usually safer to lean towards sincerity.

One thing I've seen tank a surprisingly large number of essays is complaining or making excuses for poor grades or test scores. Instead, if you've faced challenges, focus on how you've grown from them. And while it's important to stay honest, sharing information that is too personal or inappropriate (like illegal activities or very intimate details of your life) is a big red flag. Lastly, avoid skipping the proofreading process; grammatical errors and typos can undermine even the most compelling essays. Remember, different advisors might emphasize different things, but these tips should keep you safely within the bounds of what's generally recommended for the Common App essay.
