Where to attach my resume in the Common App?

I've been updating my resume and I'm pretty proud of it, to be honest. I want to include it in my Common App, but I'm not sure where it's supposed to go. Is there a specific section I should upload it, or should I just send it directly to colleges?

I'm delighted to hear that you've put effort into crafting your resume and are keen to share it with colleges! In the Common Application, there is a specific location for uploading additional materials such as a resume. This is typically located in the 'Additional Information' section, which is found within the 'Writing' section of the Common App. Here, you have the ability to include a brief explanatory note and attach relevant documents.

However, it's worthwhile to be selective about what you include in your application. The activities section of the Common App allows you to list and describe up to ten extracurricular activities. In most cases, this provides ample space to showcase your achievements and involvement. Only consider attaching a resume if it encompasses significant achievements or experiences that aren't already covered in your application or if a college requests it.

It's also a good idea to check the application requirements for each college you're applying to. Some schools have a strict policy on supplementary materials and may not welcome additional documents like resumes unless they specifically ask for them (if they specifically ask for them, there will a place to upload your resume in the school supplement section). If after reviewing the application instructions, you're still unsure whether to submit your resume or have unique circumstances, you can always reach out to the admissions office for guidance.

Remember, the goal of your college application is to present the most complete and compelling picture of yourself as possible, but also to follow the guidelines set by the Common App and individual colleges. While your resume could be an excellent tool for this, ensure it's used appropriately and enhances rather than overloads your application. Best of luck with your college applications!
