UW vs. UT? Which one is best for CS major?

Hey guys, I'm planning on applying to the University of Washington and the University of Texas for CS, and I'm wondering if anyone here can comment on how they compare? What are the pros and cons of each?

Both the Computer Science programs at the University of Washington (UW) and the University of Texas (UT) are highly esteemed, so you really can't go wrong with either! However, here are a few points to help give you some perspective on each program.

University of Washington

Pros:

- The program is situated in Seattle, which is a major tech hub. So, you can look forward to numerous internship and job opportunities with heavyweight companies like Amazon and Microsoft.

- The department is known for its research output and faculty, and offers an extensive range of electives.

- The Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at UW is consistently ranked among the top computer science programs in the nation.

Cons:

- The competitive nature of the program means you're not guaranteed your Computer Science major even after being accepted into UW. You'll need to apply to the major after completing prerequisite courses, and some students find this process stressful.

- While plentiful, the tech opportunities in Seattle can be very competitive as well.

University of Texas, Austin

Pros:

- UT has strong corporate partnerships, resulting in strong recruitment and placement opportunities, particularly within Texas.

- The program provides a solid theoretical foundation coupled with hands-on learning opportunities.

- UT Austin also has an outstanding Computer Science program, ranked amongst the top in the nation.

Cons:

- There is intense competition for entry into the program and for the top internships and research positions.

- It may consider demonstrated interest, so applications from those who visit the campus or attend virtual events might get preference.

Location could also be a significant deciding factor for you considering the very different lifestyles and climates in Seattle and Austin. Furthermore, the financial aspect could also come into play depending on whether you qualify for in-state tuition at either of these institutions. It's best to visit both if possible, talk to current students, investigate the course may offer, and see what feels right for you!
