Reporting GPA on Common App: Weighted vs Unweighted?

So I've reached the section on the Common App where I have to input my GPA, and I'm kind of stuck. Should I report my weighted GPA, which looks prettier, or my unweighted GPA for transparency? What do colleges prefer to see, especially if my school provides both?

I understand the dilemma you're facing with the GPA reporting on the Common App. The general rule of thumb is to report the GPA in the format that your high school provides it on your transcript. If your high school provides both weighted and unweighted GPAs, include the one that reflects your academic achievements more accurately.

Colleges are accustomed to receiving both types and will recalculate your GPA based on their own criteria regardless. If your school's profile explains the weighting system, you can use the weighted GPA knowing that admissions officers will have the context to understand what it represents. Additionally, include any details about the school's policy in the 'Additional Information' section of the Common App if you feel there's a need for further clarification.

Remember, whether it's weighted or unweighted, colleges are looking for the rigor of your coursework and your performance in those courses, so your GPA will never be viewed in isolation. Rest assured, as long as you follow your school's reporting practice, you'll be set.
