Do colleges ever ask for PSAT scores, or are they irrelevant for admissions?

Maybe it's a silly question, but I’m genuinely curious if colleges ever consider PSAT scores as part of the admissions process, or are they strictly for practice and scholarships?

Certainly an understandable question! Generally speaking, PSAT scores are not considered in the college admissions process. The primary purposes of the PSAT are to give students a sense of the SAT format and to qualify for National Merit Scholarships. Most colleges request SAT or ACT scores because those are standardized tests specifically designed for college admissions evaluations.

However, there are some exceptions to this general rule. For example, in very rare cases, if a student is unable to take the SAT or ACT due to extenuating circumstances, a college might consider PSAT scores as part of a holistic review. But typically, this is not the case, and students should focus on their SAT or ACT scores when considering college admissions criteria. Also, be aware that many colleges are adopting test-optional policies, so standardized test scores may not be required at all depending on where you plan to apply.

One last thing to consider is that, while colleges likely won't see your actual score, if you are named a National Merit Semifinalist, you should make sure to list that in the "Honors" section of your Common App, as that's a remarkable achievement that speaks well of your readiness for college. But if you aren't named a Semifinalist, don't worry—there are tons of other opportunities to showcase your intellectual chops, including on the real SAT (or ACT)!
